According to myth, Horus' evil brother Seth killed Osiris, and Horus lost one eye to Seth during a fight in which Horus attempted to avenge Osiris' murder. The eye was reassembled by Thoth, the god of writing, using magic. When Horus presented the reassembled eye to Osiris, he experienced a rebirth in the underworld.
