Sterling Silver Celtic Diamond Shaped Quaternary Knot Pendant
Sterling Silver Celtic Diamond Shaped Quaternary Knot Pendant
This is a classically designed Celtic quaternary pendant, hand-crafted in solid sterling silver. Quaternary simply means 4, or in this case, 4 cornered. In Celtic tradition, celtic knots like these that have a closed path (no end or beginning) are said to represent eternity or the infinite. Several schools of thought exist in what exactly the 4 sections represent. The 4 seasons (winter, sprint, summer, fall), the 4 directions (north, south, east, west), the 4 earth elements (earth, wind, water, fire). Once Christianity spread to Ireland, the 4 knots for a time represented the Latin gospels in the book of Kells. An even deeper and more mythological representation of the quaternary is that of the 4 great treasures of the Tuatha De Denann, the group who reclaimed Ireland from the Fomorians. The treasures were actually four talismans the men carried for protection; a spear, a stone, a sword, and a cauldron. Each of the treasures stood for one of the four cities located in the Northern Isles where Tuatha De Denann settled before reclaiming the stolen land. They were indeed magical items and are still highly treasured today.
I have included a photograph of the pendant next to a quarter for size reference. Pair this historic pendant with a necklace or chain and show your inner renegade.
