Rooted in the folk traditions of southern Italy, the cimaruta is a protective amulet associated with the old magical practices of the countryside. Traditionally worn around the neck or hung near a child’s bed, the charm was believed to guard against the evil eye and other unseen forces. Its form is based on a sprig of rue, an herb long connected with protection, purification, and warding in Italian folklore.

The branching structure of the cimaruta reflects the triple aspect of the Goddess, often linked to Diana and the ancient lunar traditions surrounding her worship. Along the stems appear symbolic charms such as the crescent moon, serpent, and key — images tied to the threefold goddess and the cycles of nature, the underworld, and the night. In this symbolism the key is associated with Hecate, guardian of thresholds and hidden knowledge; the crescent moon with Diana, goddess of the hunt and the night sky; and the serpent with Proserpina, representing transformation and the mysteries beneath the earth.

This pendant carries that traditional imagery in a detailed sculptural form. A faceted gemstone sits at the fixed bail above the branching charms, echoing the long association between the cimaruta and personal talismans of protection. Cast in solid .925 sterling silver, the piece has crisp relief and substantial presence. The branching rue motif, lunar symbols, and hanging charms combine to create a small amulet shaped by centuries of Italian folk magic and protective tradition.
